Es gibt weitaus schnellere Kommunikationsverfahren als E-Mails. Da wären zum Einen Chaträume oder eigenständige Chatprogramme (z.b. ICQ, MSN, AIM, etc.). Nur leider verfügen die wenigsten davon über Verschlüsselungsfunktionen, Dateitransfermöglichkeiten oder andere nützliche Spielereien. Hier schafft Miranda Abhilfe, welches ganz nebenbei auch noch alle vorher genannten Protokolle unterstützt und - worauf wir ja schon die ganze Zeit wert legen - speicherschonend agiert.

Miranda ist grundsätzlich nur ein Ersatzprogramm für mehrere Protokolltypen, mit denen man im Internet kommunizieren kann. Um dies nun auch umzusetzen, benötigt der Gegenüber mit dem man kommunizieren möchte, eins der in Miranda zur Verfügung gestellten Protokolle (in diesem Fall: ICQ). Denjenigen fügt man nun der Kontaktliste hinzu (Miranda -> Main Menu -> Find/Add Contacts...) und kann nun bequem (verschlüsselte) Sofortnachrichten, Dateien und SMS übertragen.
